In the first phase of the Power from Statistics project, five small, restricted, Round Table (RT) events were held, in different European cities, on the following topics:
The Round Tables hosted participants from various societal stakeholder groups (such as industry leaders, outstanding academics, think-tank experts, national and European policymakers and official statisticians).
The “Power from Statistics” Round Tables did not treat the setting of policy in the domains under discussion, or the merits or demerits of specific policies. The focus has rather been on how to inform policy, with a particular emphasis on (future) unmet information needs. The RTs strived to be forward-looking, i.e. looking beyond present, already known, information needs to focus on emerging trends and future needs.
Each Round Table allowed for an informal exchange between high-level stakeholders. The RTs were not tasked with coming up with "answers", but rather to allow a first exploration of topics of interest. The key outcome of each the RTs was that topics which would merit to be discussed further and more in-depth were identified.
These topics were then treated in articles (authored by the Round Table participants) in the Power from Statistics Outlook Report. The Outlook Report was the main discussion document of the high-level conference “Power from Statistics; Data, Information and Knowledge” on the future of official statistics, which took place in Brussels on 18 and 19 October 2017.
